Julie London - "Go Slow"

June 22, 2017  /  Reid Lee

The song personified the way she sang. She did it for herself, because she loved it, and she definitely took her time. Today it reminds me to calm myself down and take things one step at a time.

From her album "Make Love To Me" the iconic Ms. London croons out another torch song meant to slowly sizzle you to cinders.

So, today with honey in hands, I choose Julie London's "Go Slow" as my, each small painful step, meticulously monitored, each baby victory, song for a, look forward, look upward, look onward, Thursday.

Lance Horne - "Strange Bird"

June 21, 2017  /  Reid Lee

He's an incredible singer in his own right, but Lance is typically known for being the piano virtuoso behind many of today's leading broadway talents. His music is touching and sensitive, and his lyrics are always poignant and precise. He's the sleeper his of this decade's broadway babies.

I've had the pleasure of singing with him a number of times and I can tell you, each time he takes my breath away. I'm lucky to call him a friend, but I'm even more lucky to simply have him in my life.

So today, with nostalgia and charm, I choose Lance Horne's "Strange Bird" as my, give yourself the time, take every little miracle you get, each chance is another little window into wonder, song for a, hold my hand, take my heart, I'll carry yours just as gently, Wednesday.

Julie London - "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To"

June 20, 2017  /  Reid Lee

She was shy and reclusive, but on stage she was mesmerizing. She could hold you in the palm of her hand only to drop you a moment later. Her magnetism was undeniable, but the shy little girl inside was always there, waiting for her just off stage.

So today, with dreams like memories floating wistfully through my mind, I choose Julie London's "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" as my, dream a little dream, flirting with danger, with a glance over my shoulder song for a, It was a nice fantasy, you bet your ass, maybe someday he'll come back around Tuesday.

Christophe Beck - "Marcello, Of Course"

June 19, 2017  /  Reid Lee

A native of Montreal, Beck graduated from Crescent School in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Christophe Beck studied music at Yale University, where he was the music director of the Spizzwinks of 1989 and 1990 and the Whiffenpoofs of 1991. He studied film scoring at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where he was taught by Jerry Goldsmith among others. He studied and worked under Mike Post for a period, including writing uncredited music on some of Post's series.

He won an Emmy Award in 1998 for his work on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He has also worked on Angel and The Practice. His film credits include Starstruck (1998), Let the Devil Wear Black (1999), Bring It On (2000), Confidence (2003), American Wedding (2003), Under the Tuscan Sun (2003), Garfield (2004), Elektra (2005), Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (2006), School for Scoundrels, The Pink Panther (2006), We Are Marshall (2006), License to Wed (2007), The Seeker (2007), Fred Claus (2007), Charlie Bartlett (2007), Drillbit Taylor (2008), Phoebe in Wonderland (2008), I Love You, Beth Cooper (2009), The Pink Panther 2 (2009), The Hangover (2009), Waiting for Superman (2010), Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010), Date Night (2010), Tower Heist (2011), The Muppets (2011), Frozen (2013), Endless Love (2014), and Muppets Most Wanted (2014). He appeared in the documentary Finding Kraftland (2006) for his agent Richard Kraft.

His music is always intimate and pure, and he finds a way of telling the story of the scene without overpowering it, something many film composers today forget to do.

So today, with an "esausto" smile, I choose Christophe Beck's "Marcello, Of Course", from the film "Under the Tuscan Sun" as my, go on and let your sunflowers burst, find the little joys in life, live spherically, song for a, now is the only time you get, live for love, never give up on second chances ... or third, or forth, or fifth, Monday.

Julie London - "Always True To You (In My Fashion)"

June 15, 2017  /  Reid Lee

At this point, we all know the smokey voiced starlet who crooned out "Cry Me A River". She's a jazz staple and a legend about persistence in hollywood.

What we often forget is how funny she was, behind that cooly sexual exterior she was a shy and often very funny woman I love her take on the classic from Cole Porter's "Kiss Me Kate".

So today, with tongue in ... cheek, I choose Julie London's version of "Always True To You (In My Fashion)", as my, laugh a little, give a little, leave room for improvement, song for a, well okay then, go on and tell me I can't, no watch me soar, Thursday.

I'm also giving you Blossom Dearie's version, because I just adore it!

Poison - "Unskinny Bop"

June 14, 2017  /  Reid Lee

Poison is an American rock band that achieved great commercial success in the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. Poison has sold over 50 million records worldwide and has sold 15 million records in the United States alone. The band has also charted ten singles to the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, including six Top 10 singles and the Hot 100 number-one, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn". The band's breakthrough debut album, the multi-platinum Look What the Cat Dragged In, was released in 1986 and they hit their peak with the second album, Open Up and Say... Ahh!, which became the band's most successful album, being certified 5x platinum in the US. The popularity continued into the new decade with their third consecutive multi-platinum selling album, Flesh & Blood.

In the 1990s following the release of the band's first live album, Swallow This Live, the band experienced some line up changes and the fall of pop metal with the grunge movement, but despite a drop in popularity the band's fourth studio album, Native Tongue, still achieved Gold status and the band's first compilation album, Poison's Greatest Hits: 1986–1996, went double platinum.

"Unskinny Bop" peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100, number 5 on the Mainstream rock charts, number 15 in the UK[2] and #7 on the Australian charts. This made it the band's second highest success, after "Every Rose Has Its Thorn". The music video for the song has Bret Michaels dancing with a couple of animated neon cowgirls next to him.

The meaning of "Unskinny Bop" has always been shrouded in obscurity. C.C. DeVille later confessed that the phrase "unskinny bop" has no particular meaning. He invented it as a temporary measure while writing the song, before vocalist Bret Michaels had begun working on the lyrics. The phrase was used on the basis that it was phonetically suited to the music. The song was later played to producer Fairbairn, who stated that, although he did not know what an "unskinny bop" was, the phrase was perfect.

In the 2000s, with the original line up back together, the band found new popularity after a successful greatest hits reunion tour in 1999. The band began the new decade with the release of the long-awaited Crack a Smile... and More!, followed by the Power to the People album. The band toured almost every year to sold out stadiums and arenas. They released a brand new album, Hollyweird, in 2002 and in 2006 the band celebrated their 20-year anniversary with The Best of Poison: 20 Years of Rock tour and album, which was certified Gold and marked Poison's return to the Billboard top 20 charts for the first time since 1993. Band members have released several solo albums and starred in successful reality TV shows. After 25 years, the band is still recording music and performing.

Since their debut in 1986, they have released seven studio albums, four live albums, five compilation albums, and have issued 28 singles to radio.

So today full of laughter and nostalgia, I choose Poison's "Unskinny Bop" as my, get this thing going, what-the-what?, who cares just laugh, song for a, dance your way back to happy, no one can tell you not to, it's your party and you'll laugh if you want to, Wednesday.

Matt Franco - "Passion Fruit (Accoustic Piano Version)"

June 13, 2017  /  Reid Lee

The truth is I know NOTHING about this song or this artist! I simply shazamed it while driving the other day and jammed all the way home to it! I dig his mellow, buzzing, voice and the great string interludes. I hope someone else can tell me more about the artist and the song!

So today, with stars in my eyes, I choose  Matt Franco's "Passion Fruit (Accoustic Piano Version)" as my, find your passion, stand your ground, fight your battles bravely, song for a, let no one tell you how to be you, don't fight when you can't win, rise up to the stars Tuesday.
