Lizzo - "Water Me"

April 30, 2021  /  Reid Lee

lizzo.jpeg

And then you’re running and your booty jiggles and your parts feel heavy but strong and you start to feel yourself bounce and then start to FEEL yourself! Get to it kids. You’re the best you’ll find. Love it. Moisturize it daily.

So today, with a bounce and jiggle, I choose Lizzo’s “Water Me” as my, I dare you, I wish a bitch would, I am not the one little girl, song for an, I said what I said, step all the way off, do not tell me who or what I am supposed to be, Friday.

Sara-Bareilles-More-Love-2020.jpeg

2 years later; through a pandemic, an uprising, quarantine, a world tour, and countless spats. I am more grateful than i have a right to be. Neither one of us perfect, but each trying to be better, because of, but not only for, each other. It’s been a lovely journey so far, and I wouldn’t trade a moment of it.

So today, in gratitude and IN love, I choose Sara Bareilles - "Someone Who Loves Me" as my, in the arms of someone like you, near the medal round your neck, toes touching under the covers, song for an, adventures to come, life to live, with you by my side on the journey, Tuesday.

I love you. Let’s keep going.

PS. We were at this concert.

Santo & Johnny - "Sleep Walk"

April 15, 2021  /  Reid Lee

santo-johnny.jpg

Some days you’ve got to shake yourself awake, and even then you can feel like you’re sleep walking through them. As the sun starts to warm us, and the days get longer I can’t help but think of lazy days by the pool or the beach as sweat trickles down bodies and glasses full of cool drinks with this song playing in the background. Summer is coming.

Santo & Johnny is an American rock and roll instrumental duo of Italian descent from Brooklyn, New York, composed of brothers Santo Farina (born October 24, 1937) and Johnny Farina (born April 30, 1941).

They are known best for their instrumental melody "Sleep Walk", one of the biggest hits of the golden age of rock 'n' roll, which became a regional success and eventually scored the top of the Billboard pop chart when it was released nationally during 1959.

At present, Santo is semi-retired and Johnny currently tours and records new material with his own band. Johnny is also the president of Aniraf, Inc., an international record company based in New York City.

So today, future memories on my mind, I choose Santo & Johnny’s “Sleep Walk” as my, find the light, live the life, shake the sugar tree, song for a, remember now, look to tomorrow, find the warmth, Thursday.

Dame Shirley Bassey - "Where Do I Begin (Love Story)"

April 01, 2021  /  Reid Lee

bassey4-1.jpeg

The “Tigress of the Thames” Dame Shirley Bassey has always known how to captivate an audience. From her early days singing upbeat and cutsie love songs to her legendary days as the Bond chanteuse, she has been able to tell a story through tone, technique and movement. Hers is a talent we don’t often see.

Dame Shirley Veronica Bassey, DBE (/ˈbæsi/; born 8 January 1937) is a Welsh singer, whose career began in 1953, well known for her expressive voice and for recording the soundtrack theme songs to the James Bond films Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and Moonraker (1979). In January 1959, Bassey became the first Welsh person to gain a No. 1 single.

In 2000, Bassey was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to the performing arts. In 1977 she received the Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist in the previous 25 years. Bassey is one of the most popular female vocalists in Britain.

So today, with claws retracted, I choose Dame Shirley Bassey’s "Where Do I Begin (Love Story)" as my, lips and eyes, hips and thighs, shouts and sighs, song for a, with a claw, a nail, a tooth, Thursday.

Twocolors - "Bloodstream"

March 31, 2021  /  Reid Lee

twocolors.jpeg

Some days you just need a good beat to get you up and moving! Today’s humpday morning was tough, but this groove really helped.

To paint, you need colors. When you mix two colors, you get contrast. The DJ/producer-duo twocolors is full of contrasts, just like their city of Berlin, where the two musicians met in 2015. Constantly exploring in search of sonic excellence and magic. Alternative and underground influences but also pop and mainstream culture and music. Those two strong opposites are what their sound is anchored in. Aiming for a new symbiosis of driving electro and melodic pop. Never losing sight of their mission to entertain and make people dance. The journey has begun. You are welcome to come along. And you don’t even have to choose a color.

So today, bopping and tapping, I choose Twocolors’ “Bloodstream” as my, through your veins, in your body, out your pores, song for a, dance it out, laugh it up, smile on, Wednesday.

Dolly Parton - "Wildflowers (feat. Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris)"

March 30, 2021  /  Reid Lee

Trio-Dolly-Parton-Linda-Ronstady-Emmylou-Harris.png

Trio is the first collaborative studio album by Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. It was released on March 2, 1987, by Warner Bros. Records. The album has sold over 4 million copies worldwide and has also received several accolades.

Longtime friends and admirers of one another, Parton, Harris, and Ronstadt first attempted to record an album together in the mid-1970s, but scheduling conflicts and other difficulties (including the fact that the three women all recorded for different record labels) prevented its release.

Some of the fruits of those aborted 1970s recording sessions did make it onto the women's respective solo albums. "Mr. Sandman" and "Evangeline" appeared on Harris' album Evangeline and Parton's "My Blue Tears" was included on Ronstadt's 1982 album Get Closer. Rodney Crowell's "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" was on Harris' Blue Kentucky Girl album. "Palms of Victory," another track from the aborted 1970s sessions, was included on the Harris' 2007 box set Songbird: Rare Tracks and Forgotten Gems.

Parton and Ronstadt also recorded a version of the traditional ballad "I Never Will Marry", which appeared on Ronstadt's 1977 Simple Dreams album, though that was recorded separately from these sessions, as was Ronstadt's cover of Hank Williams' "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)", from Heart Like a Wheel, on which she was joined by Harris. During this time, Ronstadt and Harris also covered a number of Parton's compositions — Harris covered "Coat of Many Colors" and "To Daddy", and Ronstadt recorded "I Will Always Love You"—for inclusion on their various solo albums during the mid- to late-1970s. Parton, in turn, covered Harris' "Boulder to Birmingham", including it on her 1976 album, All I Can Do.

Finally, a collaboration effort came to fruition, being produced by George Massenburg. When Trio was released in March 1987, it spawned four hit singles–including a remake of Phil Spector's 1958 hit by the Teddy Bears, "To Know Him Is to Love Him".

It’s a delicate and beautifully timeless album. Go Listen.

So today, spring all around, I choose Trio’s “Wildflowers” as sung by Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt as my, with hopes on the wind, eyes in the sky, and hearts in our hands, song for a, we flew to the clouds, heard stories in the smoke, and listened to fables from the sun, Tuesday.

BLACKPINK & Lady Gaga - "Sour Candy"

March 26, 2021  /  Reid Lee

Gagabp.jpeg

As the entire country grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Asian American community is also facing an alarming rise in anti-Asian violence, racism, and discrimination.

  • In 2020, nearly 1 in 3 Asian Americans reported experiencing racial slurs or jokes since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Stop AAPI Hate documented almost 3,800 incidents against the Asian American community since March 2020, ranging from violent attacks to verbal harassment.

  • There was a 1900% increase in violence against Asian Americans in 2020 and there has been a 150% increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans in America’s major cities.

Asian Americans are the target of violent assault, traumatic verbal harassment, and often-overlooked discrimination that aims to devalue their dignity and their place in society. Such racism is the result of white supremacy and creates an unacceptable environment of fear and terror.

If you support part of their culture, support all of it. You can’t take the music, the food, the clothing, etc, but then leave the people. Support the AAPI community. #STOPASIANHATE
