Shirley Bassey - "Spinning Wheel (DJ Spinna Remix)

November 12, 2020  /  Reid Lee

SHIRLEY.jpg

A world-famous singer with a big voice and a glamorous reputation, Shirley Bassey has recorded numerous hits, including three James Bond theme songs.

“The Tigress of the Thames” Dame Shirley Veronica Bassey, DBE is a Welsh singer, whose career began in 1953, well known for her expressive voice and for recording the soundtrack theme songs to the James Bond films Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and Moonraker (1979).  In January 1959, Bassey became the first Welsh person to gain a No. 1 single.

In 2000, Bassey was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to the performing arts. In 1977 she received the Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist in the previous 25 years. Bassey is one of the most popular female vocalists in Britain.

A singer since childhood, Shirley Bassey's bold voice, along with her perseverance, helped her move beyond her impoverished upbringing. Of mixed-race heritage (with an English mother and a Nigerian father), Bassey reached a level of international acclaim that few other Black British performers had seen before her.

Bassey released her first single, "Burn My Candle," when she was 19 years old. In 1957, she had her first hit with "Banana Boat Song." Her worldwide popularity took off when she sang "Goldfinger" for the 1964 James Bond movie of the same name. She also sang the theme songs for two other Bond films, Diamonds Are Forever and Moonraker. These Bond songs, along with her interpretations of numbers like "Big Spender" and "I Am What I Am," made Bassey's career an unmitigated success.

So today, spinning madly, I choose Shirley Bassey’s “Spinning Wheel (DJ SPINNA Remix)” as my, whoa, which way am I going, what state is this, song for a, laughing all the way, keep on keeping on, tripping and stumbling up all over, Thursday.

Stephanie J Block - "Holding To The Ground"

Like a slow cooker it took Stephanie some time to be noticed, but now her star is ascendant and everyone has taken notice.

Block made her Broadway debut in 2003, originating the role of Liza Minnelli in The Boy from Oz. After reading for the role of Elphaba during the early stages of Wicked in 2000, Block became the first actress to play the role in the show's first U.S. national tour in 2005. She later reprised the role of Elphaba on Broadway from 2007 to 2008.

A three-time Tony Award nominee and six-time Drama Desk Award nominee, Block won the 2019 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical for her lead performance in The Cher Show. She also received Tony and Drama Desk nominations for her performances in The Mystery of Edwin Drood (2013) and Falsettos (2016). She received Drama Desk nominations for her performances in the Off-Broadway productions of By the Way, Meet Vera Stark (2011) and Little Miss Sunshine (2013), as well as in the Broadway production of 9 to 5 (2009).

Additionally, Block has appeared on numerous cast recordings and released a solo album, This Place I Know, in 2009. Her television credits include recurring roles on Madam Secretary (2017) and Rise (2018).

So today, doing my level best, I choose Stephanie J Block’s version of “Holding To The Ground” as my, hold on, find the solid ground, quicksand all around, song for a, shifting sands and tides, lines of lost connection, leap and you will be caught, Tuesday.

When the struggle seems a little too long some days you just have to turn up the juicy 80’s goodness and screamcry the lyrics until the madness of the world starts to make sense.

It hasn’t yet, but I’m still trying.

So today, with a wild amount of emotional exhaustion, I choose Air Supply’s “All Out Of Love” as my, look for the helpers, hope is on the horizon, change the dice, song for a, with a little bit of love, a dash of luck, and a bit more magic, Thursday.

Oleta Adams - "Get Here (If You Can)"

Hope. Belief. Wonder.

We could all use a little of that right now, and this song always brings that to me. The resurgence of hope when you believe something into being. Knowing that it is just beyond the horizon winging it’s way to you, like a gift you can’t see coming. Believe. Hope. Dream.

Oleta Adams (born May 4, 1953) is an American singer and pianist. Adams found limited success during the early 1980s, before gaining fame via her contributions to Tears for Fears's international chart-topping album, The Seeds of Love (1989). Her albums Circle of One (1991) and Evolution (1993) were top 10 hits in the UK; the former yielded a Grammy-nominated cover of Brenda Russell's "Get Here", which was a top 5 hit in both the UK and the US. Adams has been nominated for four total Grammy Awards, as well as two Soul Train Music Awards.

Adams was born the daughter of a preacher and was raised listening to gospel music. In her youth, her family moved to Yakima, Washington, which is sometimes shown as her place of birth. She got her musical start in the church.

Before gaining her opportunity to perform, Adams faced a great deal of rejection. In the 1970s, she moved to Los Angeles, California, where she recorded a demo tape. However, many music executives were exclusively interested in disco music rather than Adams' preferred style.

So today with a little more hope that we’ll get there as a country, I choose Oleta Adams cover of “Get Here (If You Can)” as my, keep believing, keep hoping, keep dreaming, song for a, patience is a virtue, stay strong, we’ll get there, Wednesday.
