Sara Bareilles - "Orpheus"

September 26, 2019  /  Reid Lee

sara-bareilles-snl.jpg

It’s no secret. She’s a muse I’ve followed for decades, and for good reason. Some days some songs just hit you right in the soft spots. They call you right back to where you were then, where you are now, what you’re afraid of going through in the future. They see you beating purple heart and pluck it’s strings with unapologetic fingers.

So today, with my heart on the outside of my chest, I choose Sara Bareilles’ “Orpheus” as my, take a breath, come by the fire, lay down your head and the bad day to rest, song for a, don’t stop searching, let the floor fall away, run on, Thursday.

Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys - "San Antonio Rose"

September 25, 2019  /  Reid Lee

bob wills.jpg

James Robert Wills (March 6, 1905 – May 13, 1975) was an American Western swing musician, songwriter, and bandleader. Considered by music authorities as the co-founder of Western swing, he was known widely as the King of Western Swing (although Spade Cooley self-promoted the moniker "King of Western Swing" from 1942 to 1969).

Wills formed several bands and played radio stations around the South and West until he formed the Texas Playboys in 1934 with Wills on fiddle, Tommy Duncan on piano and vocals, rhythm guitarist June Whalin, tenor banjoist Johnnie Lee Wills, and Kermit Whalin, who played steel guitar and bass. The band played regularly on Tulsa, Oklahoma radio station KVOO and added Leon McAuliffe on steel guitar, pianist Al Stricklin, drummer Smokey Dacus, and a horn section that expanded the band's sound. Wills favored jazz-like arrangements and the band found national popularity into the 1940s with such hits as "Steel Guitar Rag", "New San Antonio Rose", "Smoke On The Water", "Stars And Stripes On Iwo Jima", and "New Spanish Two Step".

Wills and the Texas Playboys recorded with several publishers and companies, including Vocalion, Okeh, Columbia, and MGM, frequently moving. In 1950, he had two top 10 hits, "Ida Red Likes the Boogie" and "Faded Love", which were his last hits for a decade. Throughout the 1950s, he struggled with poor health and tenuous finances, but continued to perform frequently despite the decline in popularity of his earlier music as rock and roll took over. Wills had a heart attack in 1962 and a second one the next year, which forced him to disband the Playboys, although Wills continued to perform solo.

The Country Music Hall of Fame inducted Wills in 1968 and the Texas State Legislature honored him for his contribution to American music.

In 1972, Wills accepted a citation from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in Nashville. He was recording an album with fan Merle Haggard in 1973 when a stroke left him comatose until his death in 1975. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Wills and the Texas Playboys in 1999.

"San Antonio Rose"/"New San Antonio Rose" was the signature song of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. "San Antonio Rose" was an instrumental song written by Bob Wills, who first recorded it with the Playboys on November 28, 1938. Band members added lyrics and it was retitled "New San Antonio Rose". A fresh recording was made on April 16, 1940 (Okeh 05694) with a vocal by Tommy Duncan.
The song opens with the refrain:

Deep within my heart lies a melody,
A song of old San Antone.

The song is written in the first person with the Rose of San Antone being the gentleman's lost love. Members of the Western Writers of America chose it as one of the Top 100 Western songs of all time.

The most successful recording was made by Bing Crosby with Bob Crosby and the Bob Cats on December 16, 1940 - over a million copies were sold for which Bing was awarded a gold disc.

"New San Antonio Rose" was the first national hit by Bob Wills and His Playboys, propelling them from their Southwestern fame to national notice. Their version charted in 1941 and again in 1943.

The song, both the music and lyrics, reflects the Mexican influence Bob Wills found growing up in the Southwest. Wills developed the melody of the original "San Antonio Rose" itself from a traditional tune, "Spanish Two Step", by the playing the bridge in reverse.

"New San Antonio Rose" ruffled the feathers of Southern country music moguls when Wills and the Playboys performed it with horns and a drum at the Grand Ole Opry on December 30, 1944.

So today, with a little history lingering in my ears, I choose Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys’ "San Antonio Rose" as my choose you, remember the good, little synchronicities, song for a, one more, two more, step this way with me, Wednesday.

Nick Jonas - "Jealous Remix feat. Tinashe"

Some days you just wake up happy and you want to bounce! This song came on while I was at the gym and I couldn’t help but smile and laugh and make fool of myself dancing at the gym. But guess what? I. Didn’t. Care.

When you want to be happy, you choose to be happy and ignore any of the haters.

So today, jealous of no-one but trying to show others how not to be jealous of joy that is accessible to them, I choose Nick Jonas’ “Jealous - Remix feat. Tinashe” as my, dance like everyone is watching, who cares, double birds to the sky, song for a, glow up about it, shine on, laugh right to the bank, Tuesday.

Alexander Borodin - "In The Steppes of Central Asia"

September 23, 2019  /  Reid Lee

Borodin-Full.jpg

A master of taking folk music and creating lush symphonies and operas out of it, Alexander Borodin was a Chemist by trade and I can only imagine what would have happened should he have had the time or ability to fully step into composing.

This tune, which I’ve only recently just heard is thought of as a “Symphonic Poem” and it is exactly that. He takes sounds and light and creates a story and a picture that you can’t help but see.

So today, with dreams on the horizon, I choose Alexander Borodin’s "In The Steppes of Central Asia" as my, caravan of love, a thousand tiny horses, jingling all the way, song for a, breeze off the plains, songs we have always sung, memories passed down through love, Monday.

Kina Grannis - "Stressed Out"

September 20, 2019  /  Reid Lee

So I wrote about Kina back in July. About how I first heard her beautiful cover of Elvis’ “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” in Crazy Rich Asians, and had been hooked ever since.

Her delicate cover of the GooGoo Dolls’ megahit from the Movie “City Of Angels” was both angelic and heratbreaking. She found a way to bring something authentic and new to a song that we’ve all heard so many times we stopped listening to it. Now, it’s fresh again and tugging on your heartstrings.

Now, lately, this song has (accurately) been revolving around my life. It’s been a tumultuous time in my life, and this tender rendition of what was a rather jarring song is my new attitude on how to manage stress. Break it down, chord by chord, and turn it into something beautiful.

So today, with stress breaking down all around me, I choose Kina Grannis’ cover of “Stressed Out” as my, blurry faces, happy hearts, sugar tummies, song for a, I care what you think, determine what it’s worth to you, make the choice to be happy, Friday.

I know she probably does more than covers, but honestly, if this is all she did, it would be enough. She is a masterful interpreter of song.

Jewel - "Deep Water"

September 19, 2019  /  Reid Lee

Jewel.jpg

My long standing love affair with Jewel Kilcher is much documented. She was the first voice that I was made aware of that was different than what I’d grown up listening to. She shifted my landscape and for that I will always be grateful.

She found something really honest and magical in that moment in the 90s and I still go back to those songs sometimes, in times of struggle or strife, and remind myself that “this too shall pass” or in her words “everything fades and falls away”.

So today, with water rising faster than I can bail, I choose Jewel’s "Deep Water" as my, shore yourself for the storm, brace for the waves, point yourself into the wind, song for a, love will be your lantern, let yourself see the bigger picture, you might just be struggling with the riptide and missing the calmer ocean, Thursday.

Because she’s my mama, and yesterday was her birthday, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without her guidance, wisdom, love, & inspiration.

Today is for you, Mom. You’re the best.

So today, with her smile still lingering in my mirrors, I choose Ritchie Valens’ “Donna” as my, dream a little dream, together we stand, one more small step, song for a, one more magic moment, laughter is the best medicine, remember the majesty that you’ve always had inside you, Monday.

Tove Lo - "Bad as the Boys"

She’s been the Queen of the Clouds and now she’s apparently the Lady of the Lasses. This fun, upbeat little bop has just the right mix of upbeat fun, seductive lyrics, and a beat that helps you not take things too seriously. Just like the girl in the song.

Don’t take life too seriously today. It’s only life.

So today, with a secret little smile, I choose Tove Lo’s "Bad as the Boys" as my, try something new, let it be different, unusual in the best way, song for a, take the chance, risk the hurt, who cares anyway, Friday.
