Lizzo - "Juice"

January 08, 2019  /  Reid Lee

Lizzo - Press Photo - Jabari Jacobs HR.jpg

Maybe you need a little bit of juice to get your New Year's resolutions going. If that's the case, Lizzo has just the thing. The Minneapolis rapper/flutist/meme legend continues her winning streak of sing-songy, funk-heavy rap with her latest single "Juice" and yet another meme-worthy music video to match.

"The juice ain't worth the squeeze if the juice don't look like this," Lizzo sings in the second verse. If we can muster up even a few drops of her fresh-squeezed, self-loving braggadocio to carry us all the way through the year, we should be all right.

So today, with a little extra squeeze, I choose Lizzo’s “Juice” as my, just a little more, squish it, good to the last drop, song for a, like blood from a stone, everything you’ve got, make it juicy, Tuesday.

Chet Baker - "Time After Time"

January 07, 2019  /  Reid Lee

chet-baker-press-web-optimised-1000.jpg

Chesney Henry "Chet" Baker Jr. was an American jazz trumpeter and vocalist. He earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s, particularly for albums featuring his vocals (Chet Baker Sings, It Could Happen to You). Jazz historian Dave Gelly described the promise of Baker's early career as "James Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, rolled into one."[3] His well-publicized drug habit also drove his notoriety and fame. Baker was in and out of jail frequently before enjoying a career resurgence in the late 1970s and '80s.

In 1952 Baker's musical career took off after he earned the chance to play with jazz great Charlie Parker. That same year, he joined saxophonist Gerry Mulligan's piano-less quartet, and the pairing of Baker's subdued tone and gentle phrasing with Mulligan's ear for harmonies proved a dynamic combination that helped define the cool jazz sound. The quartet reeled off such favorites as "Walkin' Shoes," "Bernie's Tune" and "My Funny Valentine," which became one of Baker's signature songs.

Named Metronome magazine's top trumpeter in 1953, Baker formed his own quartet and began contributing his delicate vocals to songs, most notably on the 1954 track "Let's Get Lost." Blessed with movie-star looks, the popular trumpeter made his film debut in the 1955 war film Hell's Horizon but turned down more acting work to set off on European tours in 1955 and 1956. However, Baker's charmed life began to erode after he became addicted to heroin around that time.

Baker moved to Europe in 1959, ultimately settling in Italy, where he appeared as "Chet l'americano" in musical comedy Howlers of the Dock (1960). However, his continued drug use landed him repeatedly in legal trouble, with arrests in Italy, England and West Germany, the last of which resulted in his deportation to the United States in 1964. Upon his return, Baker recorded five records over a three-day period, but subsequent recording efforts were panned by critics. In July 1966, he endured a brutal beating by drug dealers that severely damaged his teeth and left him unable to play the trumpet properly for years.

Baker gradually regained his skills, with Dizzy Gillespe helping to set him on the comeback trail by arranging a concert at New York City's Half Note club in 1973 followed by a reunion show with Gerry Mulligan at Carnegie Hall the next year. He returned to Europe in 1975, where he regularly performed and recorded despite essentially living as a nomad. Although years of hard living had withered his youthful voice and looks, many considered his output from this period to be among the best of his career.

Just weeks after delivering a lauded performance with the NDR Big Band and Hannover Radio Orchestra, Chet Baker was found dead outside his Amsterdam hotel in the early hours of May 13, 1988. His second-floor room window was open and drugs were found in his system, although it was never known whether his death was accidental or not.

In subsequent years, the release of Baker's unfinished memoirs, As Though I Had Wings(1997) and James Gavin's Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker (2002), provided details of the jazz icon's troubled but memorable life and career. In March 2016 the Chet Baker biopic Born to Be Blue was released, starring Ethan Hawke in the role of the troubled jazz man.

His soft, subtle approach to music made him seem like a young Bing Crosby, and his charming good looks made him easy to watch. He is the epitome of a comeback story. His is the type of life that is filled with fireworks, but the in betweens seem that much darker because of the flashing lights.

So today, with a little grace and a lot of gratitude, I choose Chet Baker’s “Time After Time” as my, you ARE lucky, look to the silver lining, dreams can come true if you give them the chance, song for a, break the shells, lose your head, walk straight towards the thing you want and make it yours, Monday.

Mickki Brown - "Get Here" & "My Romance"

January 03, 2019  /  Reid Lee

Mickki was one of the last jazz Greats, and I was so lucky to have had the chance to perform with her. Here, covering the Oleta Adams classic, she truly shines.

Her voice was smooth and mellow, never reaching or straining, there was an effortless quality that made it imminently listenable. When she turned on the juice, however, she could really set the room on fire, as witnessed by her rousing performance as the voice of the Muse in Disney’s Hercules, and she was thrice nominated for BMA’s Top Female Jazz Artist.  Ms. Brown has performed with such legendary greats such as Patti Austin, Chaka Khan, Phil Collins, Dennis Edwards (former lead singer of “the Temptations”) and Harry Manx just to name a few. Some of her accomplishments include touring with “Mr. Las Vegas” Wayne Newton as a featured soloist nightly.

So, today, with love to lift you up, I choose Ms. Mickki Brown’s versions of “Get Here” & “My Romance” as my, let your voice lift your soul to heaven, find the light in every dark day, remember what truth you’ve learned in the moments that shock you into reality, song for a, with a wave and a smile, how can I help you to say goodbye, you will continue to be loved Thursday.

The video for “My Romance” is titled “Smile” but listen anyhow.

Alessia Cara - "Scars to Your Beautiful" & Taylor Swift - "Delicate"

January 02, 2019  /  Reid Lee

A&T.jpg

So I woke up with “Scars to Your Beautiful” in my head, and it was so strong, this understanding that your faults define you more than your flawlessness ever could, then immediately after I heard “Delicate” and it hit me that if we weren’t delicate, if we weren’t vulnerable, if we didn’t allow ourselves the opportunities to learn by failure, then we wouldn’t be anything like what we are; and I LIKE what we are.

I’m not talking about the royal we, I mean humanity. Yes we’re in a hard, weird, backwards time, where everything feels aggressive and everyone seems angry or on edge, but at our core, we are love. We are soft, beautiful creatures, designed for loving each other. We are Delicate and Beautiful. Cherish each other.

So today, with my own tiny place in this universe VERY apparent to me, I choose Alessia Cara’s "Scars to Your Beautiful" & Taylor Swift’s "Delicate" and my duo of, one must accept the one to receive the other, the joy is in the contrast, and seeing that the differences are only something we invented, songs for a, believe in your own little heart, every tiny spark of divinity, inside of a fragile little shape we call our own, Wednesday.

P!nk - "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken"

December 31, 2018  /  Reid Lee

pANK.jpg

Well Kiddos, it’s been quite a year. We’ve had ups and downs, broken hearts, and wild adventures. We’ve fallen in love, we’ve had lover’s spats, we dove off the deep end into pools unknown and have found ourselves floating.

While this year has certainly been challenging, it has also given us many gifts. It’s given us the chance to see into the most hidden parts of ourselves. This year asked us to take ownership of our own faults, to make changes in our ways of thinking and to break patterns we were so desperately trapped inside of. This year pushed us harder than we knew it would, in ways unexpected and surprising, and it has born fruit for us, that will sustain us for years to come.

So while things may look bleak in this gray winter don’t forget to take a moment and congratulate yourself for every single step you’ve taken this year to get where you are. You have done and incredible job, and you are still going.

So, today with a bittersweet smile and reinvigorated courage, I choose P!nk’s “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” as my, remember how strong you are, it is part of your beauty, your stumbles have given you grace, song for a, let go the things that no longer serve you, hold on to the gems you’ve found along the way, let your strengthened heart continue to light your path, Monday of New Year’s Eve.

Billie Holiday - “I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm”

December 28, 2018  /  Reid Lee

IMG_1334.JPG

As we journey home from, well, home, I see how much love there is in the air. Cold nights bring out warm feelings and help you to hold on to warm

memories. The bitter end of the bittersweet season lends itself to a bit more kindness and the lingering sweetness left over from all the holiday seasons many sweet treats.

So today, with a prayer and a promise, I choose Billie Holiday’s “I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm” as my, each little gift, grace in forgiveness, no love left behind, song for a, cheer up Charley, this little light, hope for the hopeless, Friday.
