Reid Lee

Audrey Hepburn - "Moon River"

May 24, 2018  /  Reid Lee

audrey.jpg

Her voice was soft, the words were easy, and the song became immortal. There are days when though you have been laid to waste, your body is wrecked, and your eyes are bleary, yet all you can feel is the love that surrounds you. Suddenly your pain is gone, the world is silent and the love you couldn't understand before you found it surrounds you like the arms of someone you never knew you needed.

Thank you family, thank you chosen family, thank you friends. I am consistently amazed by the resilience, strength, love, and support I am blessed with on a daily basis.

So today, with strength like a lion, I choose Henry Mancini's "Moon River" as my, crack open your heart, unfold like petals, shine like the stars, song for a, with sunlight on you face, with love in your eyes, with warm hands to hold, Thursday.

Ariana Grande - "No Tears Left To Cry"

May 22, 2018  /  Reid Lee

Some weekends you just wanna get silly. This was one of those weekends. We destroyed it. We went as far out to the edge of our wild, weird, and wonderful selves, and it was glorious. We danced, we worshiped, we sang, and we lip sanc.

Granted I didn't take home the crown, and I didn't know this song when it was chosen for me to lip sync to ... but you better believe I know it now, and it will encapsulate a memory that I will keep forever.

So today, with a heart full tears in my eyes, I choose Ariana Grande's "No Tears Left To Cry" as my, cry it out, get back up, slay slay SLAY, song for a, be more than you thought possible, never forget the goddess you bring inside you, call out to your tribe - they will hear you - they will find you Tuesday.

M. Tennyson - "Spark"

May 18, 2018  /  Reid Lee

M-Tennyson-Spark-Song-Exclusive-Premiere-Feature.jpg

I am honored to be surrounded by magical beings. Creators of universes and realities that make the world a better place and make me want to be a better human. M. Tennyson is that kind of man. His wild passion for life, his alarming ability to shift from wild enthusiasm to startling vulnerability, his childlike sense of wonder, they are the pillars of his personality and it comes through beautifully in his music.

This song is a special kind of mood, with trippy, intoxicatingly-lush musing, chords, lyrics that take you on a journey and harmonies that make you want to close your eyes and sway. Created  when he was at a crossroads of sedimentation vs. change, he chose growth and that has made all the difference. “Life’s about change and nothing ever stays the same,” country legend Patty Loveless sings in one of her ballads, and that mentality hums through this explosive spark of a song.

When he turned 30, that’s when life reminded him of the need to change. He explains, “[This song] is about that moment of recognition in our lives where we realize, in the quiet of our stillness, that change is truly possibly.” And so, he made some changes, reassessed his priorities and was reborn in a pretty enlightened way. “Spark” is an illuminating and timely confession, chiseled in effervescent and glowing synths, allowing his vocal to shatter the static and come clean. The song samples his forthcoming Boy Untitled EP, which accompanies his five-part, fully-illustrated book called A Wanderer’s Love Letter to the Universe.

So today, looking forward into the great wild unknown, I choose M. Tennyson's "Spark" as my, day tripping, crystal vision, sip & twirl, song for an, explosion of full fantasy [redacted], be exactly who you are at any given moment, do not fear to let things go - for only then can you accept what is new, Friday.

Tennyson will perform the entire EP at his June 16 show at NAVEL in downtown Los Angeles. Danny Dolan choreographs. Details here.

Willie Nelson - "On The Road Again"

May 17, 2018  /  Reid Lee

30-willie-nelson-cover.nocrop.w529.h756.jpg

He was one of the original outlaws. A wander with a poet's heart, he was the Walt Whitman of Country Music.

The critical success of the album Shotgun Willie (1973), combined with the critical and commercial success of Red Headed Stranger (1975) and Stardust (1978), made Nelson one of the most recognized artists in country music. He was one of the main figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music that developed in the late 1960s as a reaction to the conservative restrictions of the Nashville sound. Nelson has acted in over 30 films, co-authored several books, and has been involved in activism for the use of biofuels and the legalization of marijuana.

Born during the Great Depression, and raised by his grandparents, Nelson wrote his first song at age seven and joined his first band at ten. During high school, he toured locally with the Bohemian Polka as their lead singer and guitar player. After graduating from high school in 1950, he joined the Air Force but was later discharged due to back problems. After his return, Nelson attended Baylor University for two years but dropped out because he was succeeding in music. During this time, he worked as a disc jockey in Texas radio stations and a singer in honky-tonks. Nelson moved to Vancouver, Washington, where he wrote "Family Bible" and recorded the song "Lumberjack" in 1956. In 1958, he moved to Houston, Texas, after signing a contract with D Records. He sang at the Esquire Ballroom weekly and he worked as a disk jockey. During that time, he wrote songs that would become country standards, including "Funny How Time Slips Away", "Hello Walls", "Pretty Paper", and "Crazy". In 1960 he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and later signed a publishing contract with Pamper Music which allowed him to join Ray Price's band as a bassist. In 1962, he recorded his first album, ...And Then I Wrote. Due to this success, Nelson signed in 1964 with RCA Victor and joined the Grand Ole Opry the following year. After mid-chart hits in the late 1960s and the early 1970s, Nelson retired in 1972 and moved to Austin, Texas. The ongoing music scene of Austin motivated Nelson to return from retirement, performing frequently at the Armadillo World Headquarters.

In 1973, after signing with Atlantic Records, Nelson turned to outlaw country, including albums such as Shotgun Willie and Phases and Stages. In 1975, he switched to Columbia Records, where he recorded the critically acclaimed album Red Headed Stranger. The same year, he recorded another outlaw country album, Wanted! The Outlaws, along with Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, and Tompall Glaser. During the mid-1980s, while creating hit albums like Honeysuckle Rose and recording hit songs like "On the Road Again", "To All the Girls I've Loved Before", and "Pancho and Lefty", he joined the country supergroup The Highwaymen, along with fellow singers Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson.

His voice is polarizing and iconic. His lyrics are true and eternal. His legacy will never be forgotten. Willie Nelson is one of the last few holdouts from a time when American music was being defined and distilled.

So today, with classics and kisses on my mind, I choose Willie Nelson's "On The Road Again" as my, find your adventure, zest for a life untamed, wild like the skies and the oceans, song for an, erupt through the malaise, become the star you seek to guide yourself by, find the wild light within, Thursday.

Sofi Tukker - "Best Friend (feat. Nervo)"

May 16, 2018  /  Reid Lee

Sofi Tukker.jpeg

I'm so stoked to see them tonight in LA! They've got a sound that makes you wanna start dancing. It's fresh, it's new, and it's definitely original! Sofi Tukker is a New York-based musical duo consisting of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. The band is perhaps best known for today's song "Best Friend," which was featured in a commercial during Apple's unveiling of the iPhone X on September 12, 2017.

Paste Magazine described Sofi Tukker's release as "an insatiable dance collection of jungle-pop songs with many well-executed nods towards Brazilian instruments, poets and to the national language, Portuguese". The magazine's review referred to the "carefully conceptualized 'Matadora'" as "the album's show-stopper".

So, today with laughter and a little bit of crazy, I choose Sofi Tukker's "Best Friend (feat. Nervo)" as my, do you wanna meet me, let's talk some $#*!, lets create a language, song for a, who cares, make it mine, go one and get a little wild, Wednesday!

Renée Fleming - "Requiem, Op. 48: Pie Jesu"

May 15, 2018  /  Reid Lee

renee-fleming-soprano.jpg

One of the high divas of Modern Opera, Fleming captures something ethereal and divine in this piece. Her talent for song interpretation is matched only by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Maria Calas. She has something that most opera singers forget to train, emotive expression. You can hear every tear dripping from her voice. It is breathtaking.

So today, with sight not needed, I choose Renée Fleming's "Requiem, Op. 48: Pie Jesu" as my, lift your soul, close your eyes, listen with your heart, song for a, break open the vault, discover your own passion, live life with hunger, Tuesday.

Some days the only thing to do is put your feelings in a box, shove that box into the darkest corner of your mind, throw on your big boy pants, and get the job done.

Today, with grit, I choose the Beatles' "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" as my, with style, with panache, with determination, song for a, without fuss, without tears, without a scene, Monday.
